Ellyse Perry has been given an ultimatum by her W-League Club Canberra United. Quit cricket (which she represents Australia at) or get dumped by CU. Neither sport is professional in Australia and neither pays enough to earn a decent salary. Thoughts?

Both national bodies (Soccer/Cricket) are privately aghast at Canberra’s short-sightedness.  Perry is a fantastic athlete, is such an asset and is a great ambassador for sport in this country; particularly sport as played by women.  That she should be made to choose between her passions is astonishing.  It’s not like she’s lazy and unfit and not giving 110% to the teams she represents.  Sport is one of the last bastions of male dominance and it’s hard enough for women as it is so athletes like Perry are particularly valuable and necessary for a positive profile.  Why would Canberra want to mess with that?  They’re not thinking about the good of the game and more widely, they’re not thinking about the good of women’s sport.
